At TELLUS LANDSCAPING we put the environment at the heart of everything we do.

All of our materials are sustainably sourced, wherever possible from local suppliers.

We don’t do plastic! Whether that is Artificial Turf or Plastic Fencing. We also try to avoid plastic waste as much as possible.

When designing gardens we try to use natural products as much as possible. Natural stone and treated timber are our preference rather than concrete and composites.

We try to reuse or repurpose old materials wherever we can, without compromising the quality of our work.

What we can’t reuse or repurpose we recycle! Only then, if there is really no other option, will we responsibly dispose of the waste, composting as much as possible.

We consider wildlife, minimise travel for our team and our supplies, plant trees to offset our carbon footprint and harvest water to reduce wastage.

Garden Design

We offer a Garden Design service using the latest in Landscape Architecture Software.

Designs start at £250 inclusive of VAT which includes one onsite consultation, draft design and one revision.

Further revisions attract additional fees.

Our clients frequently find that the 3D Designs really help them visualise what can be achieved in their gardens and it’s a great way to refine designs and layouts before committing to the work.

If you decide to go ahead with Tellus Landscaping to carry out your Landscaping Project then the design fee is deducted from the contract value.

Past Projects

Limestone paving, new turf

As part of a complete home renovation and modernisation project we were asked to transform the garden into an open and airy family garden. This involved taking down a 35m long 3m high conifer hedge, old brick raised planters and rotten decking area. We designed a new 80m2 L shaped raised patio which was laid with natural Limestone paving. We also created a lovely, level family lawn, installed a new feather edge fence all round the garden and build a bespoke large shed and bin store for the customer.

Gravel mulch, feather edge fence

Working for a retired couple in their 80’s, the brief was to make their garden low maintenance but still pleasant to look at and spend time in. We removed the overgrown and tired flower beds and planters and lawns and replaced them with treated timber raised planting beds mulched with gravel. The natural slate paving around the house was repaired and re-pointed and the old, deteriorating, driveway was lifted and replaced with block paving.

Slate path, natural stone path

For this project we were asked to renew an old and unstable natural stone path which wound its way around a formal shrub border by reusing as much of the original stone as possible. We lifted the Yennadon Slate path carefully, cleaned off and set aside the individual pieces, then installed a full compacted sub-base. We then relaid the original stones on a full wet bed of sand and cement mortar. The resulting path will last for many years to come.

Closed Board fence

Our clients had recently bought a new build property next to a main road running through a beautiful South Hams village. The road noise was proving to be a problem so they called us for ideas on what to do. We agreed to install a 45m long 1.8m high “Closed Board” Feather Edge fence then plant a hedge of Bay Laurel on the garden side of the fence. The result was an instant reduction in road noise which will only improve as the hedge grows and thickens up.

Rustic Slate Paving

It was a pleasure to help the owners of this 200 year old cottage to reimagine their garden entertaining space. Taking out some old decking and digging in to the garden we created space for a 50M2 Rustic Slaet patio retained with treated sleepers. We build storage into the bench seating and installed 4 corner posts to support a canvas shade cover. The area was finished off with painted horizontal fencing for privacy and a new turfed lawn.

Aluminium decking, Aluminium Pergola, lighting

We were initially contracted to prepare then seed the back lawn of a large property in Mannamead, Plymouth. However, after being badly let down by another contractor the customer asked us to take on the relaying of 80M2 of reclaimed slate paving in two areas around the property. The old laying course was removed and the sub-base topped up and relevelled. In one area we added an additional flight of steps to achieve the correct fall on the new patio. The reclaimed slate paving was then laid on a full wet bed of 6:1 sharp sand and cement mortar with each slab primed using an SBR slurry to aid adhesion. The patios were then pointed using Nexus Fusion Pro Joint in Mid Grey.

Raj Green patio

For this project in Plymstock, Plymouth the client wanted a tired area of gravel replaced with a sleek and attractive patio to improve the usability of the area.

We chose Riven Raj Green Blend Sandstone in a four size patio pack to be jointed with a proprietary brush in jointing compound.

The result is a modern and clean entertainment space that the customers were delighted with.

Drystone wall

Returning to work for previous clients in Bere Alston we were delighted to carry out this piece of traditional drystone wall which really enhanced the landscaping and design of the garden. Using over 25 ton of locally quarried stone walling we created a new Devon bank to retain the hedging and help define the boundary of the garden. Soil was then seeded to form a formal lawn.

sawn and honed sandstone

For this project we were asked to modernise a tired tier in a back garden.

After removing some overgrown shrubs and lifting the old turf which had become clogged with weeds we also removed the old gravel infilled patio.

We clad the sleepers at the back of the garden to improve the design look of the area before laying a new sawn and honed sandstone patio.

Finally we laid new lawn turf to complete the garden design.

Landscaping sleepers

Not every Landscaping or Garden Design job is huge!

For this client we built a bespoke raised planting bed using softwood Landscaping Sleepers.

The bed was just under 3m long and 40cm high.

Located next to their patio the client wanted to fill the bed with aromatic herbs.

We provided a planting schedule for them to help with the choice of plants.

Composite decking, black slate, rendered walls

We love getting our teeth into a full Garden Transformation.

For this project we excavated almost 40 ton of earth the create a sunken and private entertaining space outside the clients bi-fold doors. Using Black Brazilian Slate paving we created a curved patio area which complimented the new lawn area.

Steps built into the new retaining wall leads up to a 38m2 composite deck in dark grey with inset lights.

L-shaped rendered block work benches with in-built storage sit in front of rendered blockwork planters.

A new back garden wall and gate completed the design.

The customers garden was their pride and joy however it was in need of some updating.

As a retired engineer our client had a very good idea of what they wanted and we were able to help them select the right mateirals to achieve the look they were after.

We designed and installed a bespoke pergola, Limestine patio, blockpaved pathway an d rebuilt the existing steps.

A stainless Steel and glass balustrade completed the transformation.

#compositedecking #garden design #limestonepaving

For this project the client was in declining health and wanted a garden that would be fully accessible for a wheelchair.

For obvious reasons it also had to be very low maintenance.

We designed a garden that would allow them to fully access it from their french doors without comprimising the buildings damp proof course.

A large area of composite decking was built ontop of a concrete pad.

A ramp, compliant with DDA regulations, then allowed them to access a lower paved area laid in Dove Grey Limestione.

#landscaping #gardendesign #paving #patio

For this paving project our customer selected Rippon Buff Sandstone for a wrap around patio engulfing their conservatory.

We extended the patio into a short path and set of steps used to access their garage.

For the main patio we edged it in 100 x 100 Black Limestone Cobbles.

Another happy customer!

Aluminium decking, Aluminium Pergola, lighting

The Junior Doctors at Derriford Hospital had a roof terrace attached to their lounge which was tired and depressing. Tellus Landscaping were successful in winning the contract to design and install a low maintenance, relaxing and stress free terrace that could be used in all weathers.

Access was a challenge with the terrace being on the 7th floor of a very busy hospital but after just 10 days on site the space was transformed!

Another happy customer!

landscaping, garden lighting, raised bed, retaining wall, new turf

A complete garden transformation in Plymstock near Plymouth. Two porcelain patios in Kandla Grey Porcelain, new retaining wall for the planted border, new garden lighting, water feature, lawn and a planting finished this project off. The result was a completely different garden.

decking, retaining walls, raised beds, landscaping sleepers

Our challenge was to design and build a set of features that would compliment this architect designed one off property on the edge of woodland. The design had to flow and mirror the curves of the house whilst being practical and functional. The result was a terraced bank, raised 35m2 timber deck with curved edges and a pair of curved sweeps of vertically mounted landscaping sleepers to define the entrance to the clients house.

Garden Design, Computer Design, Landscaping design

Tellus Landscaping were commissioned to provide a design for a front garden in Gunnislake, Cornwall. The 1950’s cottage bungalow had been extensively refurnished internally and the homeowner wanted a garden design that suited the location, the property and their lifestyles.

We were delighted to help!

Fencing, turf, garden clearance

As part of a far larger project we reclaimed a large area of overgrown and neglected garden which the previous owners had been using as an area for the chickens as well as growing fruit and vegetables. We cleared the entire area, installed new closed board fencing to two sides, levelled, imported 7 ton of locally produced compost them laid 250m2 of turf supplied by South Devon Turf.

The result was a fully secure, family friendly lawn area – big enough for a game of football!

landscaping, decking, swimming pool

Tellus Landscaping were sub-contracted by another local Landscaping company to build and install the swimming pool on this large project in Colebrook, Devon.

We assembled the 5m diameter swimming pool on site, installed and commissioned the plumbing then integrated the install with the decking which was built by another sub-contractor.

landscaping, devon, cornwall, plymouth, porcelain patio, lawn, turf

For this project we installed a 70m2 porcelain patio which wrapped around two sides of the customers house. We also laid 90m2 of new turf and built two raised timber planters to create a junction between the patio and lawn.

Composite Decking

Our clients were “Self Builders”. They had built their dream home on a plot owned by a family member during Lock-Down. Having sorted the inside of their house they called us in to start the process of sortin gout the garden.

We installed a new deck measuring 18m2 using composite joists and decking boards. We sorted out a set of block build steps by rendering them and facing the treads with Grey Brazilian Slate. This paving was also used to lay in a path around the front of the property. Finally we turned an area of weeds into  lovely family lawn.

Timber Deck

Access was a real challenge on this build!

The clients garden was steeply sloped neaning all the materials had to be carried by hand up roughly 80 steps to the work area.

It was worth all the effort though!

We installed a 40m2 treated timber deck with timber balustrade to make the most of the view from the top of the garden.

Sleeper retained garden on budget landscaping landscapedesign gardendesign garden design

For this project we worked with a design from another Garden Designer that the client had already commissioned.

With a limited budget we worked with her to develop the design to make it affordable and practicable.

We would not normally use softwood sleepers for building a terraced garden but in this case it was the onmly viable and affordable option.

The end result was a usable space which the client could plant up in her own time.

Sleeper and gravel path landscaping landscapedesign garden design Devon Plymouth

A protected Oak tree was creating a real problem area with the clients lawn. It was both sucking the moisture out of the soil and the shade from the canopy made it impossible to maintain a lush lawn.

Our solution with to lay in a simple path made of reclaimed railway sleepers patially buried in the ground and secured with galvanised brackets. Between the sleeper treads we installed landscaping membrane then 20mm Golden Flint.

The path was also retained with tanelised timber to create a hard edge for the lawn.

The end result is an attractive and practical path.

Aluminium pergola porcelain paving landscaping garden makeover gardendesign

On this project we were asked to create a modern, simple and clean design that was attractive and low maintenance.

We had to reduce dig the entire garden to bring the paving in 150mm below the house Damp Proof Course. 80 ton of soil removed!

We then laid over 75m2 of porcelain paving wrapping around the house, new raised beds, new brick built steps and new feather edge fencing completed the project.

Durapost fencing @durapost

Our clients were next door neighbours. They were keen to have an attractive, robust and long lasting fence installed to keep their dogs apart and allow them free access to the front gardens.

Our solution with a 1m tall picket fence built using Durapost fence posts. We created separate gates for each garden as well as the main fence and also installed a timber handrail for one of the neighbours.

Large garden makeover landscape landscaping garden deign

Having recently moved from the centre of Plymouth to a large family home on the edge of Dartmoor the client needed our help!

We turned a 250m2 neglected vegetable area into a family friendly lawn, this meant we had to build an accesible path down a 4m tall bank.

We also extended the clients timber deck by 35m2 and replaced a badly rotten area of raised decking too!

A bespoke built pool house, timber store and bin shed completed this project!

Natural stone crazy paving and natural stone walls

This property was over 200 years old in the Cornish coastal village of Cawsands.

Tight access meant everything had to be carried in and out of the garden by hand.

We stripped out a mish-mash of old poorly built landscaping and created a garden design which made the most of the limited space, coastal location and age of the property.

Locally quarried slate was used to create two crazy paving patios, stone from the same quarry was then used to build over 30m2 of stone walls.

We finished off the project with a bespoke built handrail and a range of coastal plants.

Limestone patio with Golden Quartz wall cladding Landscaping garden design Devon Plymstock Landscaping Company

After buying their perfect house in terms of internal layout our clients needed the garden  sorting out.

With mobility issues the current garden just wasn’t safe for them.

This project was big!

90 linear meters of wall cladding, 250m2 of Yellow Limestone Paving, 10 ton of decorative gravel, 150 shrubs and lots of sweat and tears!

Wildlife pond wildlife friendly landscape design garden

This one was a challenge.

How could we turn a steeply sloping garden with steep steps and weed infested “lawn” areas into something attractive, easy to maintain and freindly for wildlife?

Our solution was to dig out all the weeds then terrace the slopes using locally quarried slate rockery stone before laying down heavy duty landscaping membrane, planting with over 60 new perennial shrubs.

On the top tier of the garden we created a 4m long by 2m wide and 45cm deep wildlife pond planted with a range of deep water, mid water and marginal pond plants.

Grigio Grey Porcelain Patio grouted with Ultrascape Flowpoint

We were approached by a young couple from Ivybridge to help redesign their back garden. Several other landscaping companies had declined the offer but we were happy to help.

Together we helped them visualise a modern, contemporary garden that suited their lifestyle and the needs of their growing family.

The end result was a complete overhaul involving new retaining walls, new steps, two ne patios and 50m2 of Self Binding Gravel for their son to ride his bike on.
